Class programmes Primary Education - at the museum

Below are the 6 class programmes you can follow with your class at Sonnenborgh.

Grades 1-2: Hi Sonnie!

Preschool programme about day and night. Sonnie the space creature takes pre-schoolers on an investigation about day and night on Earth. A subject that is, of course, a mystery to Sonnie himself. Students investigate what a light source is and what reflects light. Then students playfully discover the concepts behind day and night.

Grades 5-8: Step into the shoes of an astronomer

How do you explore the solar system, planets and meteorites like a true astronomer? In this new class programme, you learn the basics! We use tactile materials as much as possible so that the complicated research topics become literally and figuratively tangible. The class programme is thus also suitable for visually impaired students.

Grades 5-8: Long live the planets

In this class programme, students discover what it takes to live on a planet. What role do water and temperature play on a planet? How different are the planets near our sun? Is air always important? Where is life possible: only on Earth…? Students are challenged to design their own habitable planet.

Grades 5-8: Hovering and gravity

In this class programme, students explore what gravity is. Is gravity the same in all places in our solar system? And what about weightlessness? We design balloon rockets and investigate which designs go faster or get higher. What is the effect of different shapes of wings? Does it work better with lots of air, or less?

Grades 5-8: Star in the picture

In Star in the picture, students discover what stars and constellations are. How can a star give off so much light? What is a spectrum and what use is it to us? Why do you see some constellations all year round and others only occasionally? Weather permitting, we look at the sun – the biggest star in our solar system – through the telescope.

Prices, booking and guidance

To book a class programme, contact us via 030 820 1420 or onderwijs@sonnenborgh.nl. School classes can also visit Sonnenborgh by appointment outside regular opening hours. In connection with booking guides, we request that you make a reservation at least three weeks in advance.

At the museum All class programmes at the museum cost €85 up to 15 students and €170 up to 30 students. Schools pay only the fee for the guided tour and no museum entrance fee. With each class programme in the museum, the group receives a guide from Sonnenborgh for every 15 students. In addition, the school provides one guide per group of 15 students.

Practical information

  • All class programmes last 1.5 hours, with the exception of the preschool programme Hi Sonnie!; which lasts 1 hour.
  • The astronomy class programmes contribute directly to core objectives 42 (investigation of physical phenomena) and 46 (position of Earth relative to the sun). In addition to core objectives 42 and 46, the meteorology class programme also contributes to core objective 43 (learning how to describe weather and climate using temperature, precipitation and wind).
  • In each class programme, we use the following methods: talking (interactive presentation in the lecture hall), looking (through a telescope) and doing (research). Two weeks before your school visits Sonnenborgh, you will receive preparatory educational material by e-mail.
